A reminder from UH Occupational Health Services: July is UV Safety Awareness Month
Summer is here and the sun is shining bright! The sun emits radiation in the form of ultraviolet (UV) rays. While most UV exposure comes from the sun, artificial sources (e.g., indoor tanning beds and sun lamps) are also a source of exposure.
This month is about identifying the risks associated with excessive sun exposure and learning ways to protect yourself.
People who get a lot of exposure to UV rays are at greater risk for developing:
- Vision problems and damage to the eyes
- Suppression of the immune system
- Premature aging of the skin
- Skin cancer
These risk factors are present every day of the year; however, the dangers are greater during the long summer days when you may spend more time in the sun. The sun is at its peak between 10 am to 4 pm. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself:
- Stay in the Shade
- Protect your skin with clothing that is long and preferably dark
- Wear a hat
- Wear UV-blocking sunglasses
- Use sunscreen
- Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps
